Helping Data Teams Deliver Trusted Data
What started as an open-source tool has evolved into the go-to data observability solution for modern data teams.
Our Story
We founded Elementary in August 2021 to solve a problem we both experienced firsthand: unreliable data.
Data observability tools were either too complex, too rigid, or didn’t fit into existing workflows. Meanwhile, industries like software development and cybersecurity had robust tools for reliability and anomaly detection. Data teams deserved the same.
With backgrounds in data, software development, DevOps, and security, we applied proven reliability principles from these fields to data observability.

After speaking with hundreds of data teams, it became clear—there wasn’t a solution we, as data engineers, would want to use.
So, we built it.
Elementary started as an open-source data observability solution designed to make observability a natural part of the workflow. With a two-minute setup, users could monitor data using the tools, permissions, and warehouses they already use, gaining visibility and analyzing results in BI tools.
The response was overwhelming. Over two years, thousands of organizations have adopted Elementary OSS.
As open-source adoption grew, our users loved the visibility and reliability they gained—but they wanted more. So, in April 2024, we introduced Elementary Cloud—built on our open-source foundation but with the enterprise-grade tools teams need to scale data observability.
Now, organizations like Patagonia, Fiverr, and the NY Mets rely on Elementary Cloud to enhance data quality, improve collaboration, strengthen governance, and build trust—maximizing the value of their data investments.
