Column-level Lineage

Elementary’s lineage feature provides an effective way to investigate test results and trace data issues across your pipelines. From the lineage view, users can directly inspect data samples and queries, identifying whether issues originate from upstream tables or columns. The Cloud Platform provides column-level lineage tracking, revealing how data flows from source tables through transformation layers to BI assets, such as dashboards in Looker or Tableau.

With this detailed view, teams can determine if a data issue affects downstream dashboards or remains contained within earlier pipeline stages. The feature also maps transformations occurring within BI tools, such as Looker’s Explore layers or Tableau’s data sources and sheets, offering visibility into whether upstream data issues impact final reports.

For complex data pipelines, the zoom-in mode helps narrow the focus to specific columns, filtering out irrelevant tables and layers to provide a clearer view of how data is transformed. This granular visibility makes it easier to pinpoint root causes and assess the real impact of data issues across your environment.
